Julian of Norwich was a 'mystic' of the 14thC in England. She was given 16 mystical revelations of the crucified Christ, and wrote and rewrote these over the next 20 years. Can you imagine dear Reader, that in the writing of 14thC Julian of Norwich, there is no comment on the world's turmoil of her day. She 'transcended events'. "Any specific historical occurrence is of relative unimportance to one who does not worry, and has no anxiety about those events! She knows and acknowledges pain, suffering and turmoil, but it is a passing beyond those earthly things. She refuses to be trapped by them, through the unswerving quiet confidence that God is in all things....Indeed, she shows her assurance that her Lord will 'give us more light and solace in heavenly joy by drawing our hearts from the sorrow and darkness which we are in." " (A Lesson of Love. Fr John-Julian)
And Christ Himself tells us 'Do not worry'......and He said this in a time of political and social turmoil!! So let us honour our Lord and God, Father Son and Holy Spirit, and transcend the waves crashing on us, to trust in Christ within and outside us, who has overcome the world. Let us allow Him to give us 'more light and solace in Heavenly joy by allowing Him to draw our hearts out of the sorrow and darkness'. Then we have Joy and Hope to offer to others...then we can be a Light in the darkness... and bear His Light into dark places. Let us 'play' with the lighting of the times, and bring Light and hope beyond the current circumstances, pointing to the goal of Eternal Life in Christ in God.
Yet like Julian of Norwich we have to choose for this and refuse to be trapped by the thinking that is going around. My worry does nothing. Our faith, prayer and praise, at least changes us, and through us our vision of and response to those around us changes because we see them through Christ's heart. Lord have mercy.
